Proper Insulation Will Help Decrease Your Energy Bills All Year

As a Connecticut homeowner, you know full-well how harsh the winters and summers can be here. One of the best ways to save on your energy bills for years to come is to update your home's insulation. Dr. Energy Saver Of Connecticut is a professional blown insulation contractor, catering to residential homes in Litchfield County and nearby. Hop on the path to savings by contacting us today!

Dr. Energy Saver Of Connecticut likes using blown-in cellulose insulation for many homes due to the fact that it is one of the best types of insulation that can match or exceed the insulation value of fiberglass, with R-values as high as R-4 per inch. That is because, unlike fiberglass which doesn't stop air movement, cellulose does a good job of slowing or stopping air leaks that can waste energy and cause cold drafts. It is also eco-friendly, as it takes much less energy to manufacture than other types of insulation, and is even made from recycled newspaper. Plus, blown-in cellulose is resistant to fires, mice, and mold, so you can count on the insulation value lasting.

Ice Dam Repair & Prevention Solutions

Homes in this area of the country are exposed to frigid temperatures and snow every winter.  Because of this, ice dams are common issues that homeowners deal with.  Ice dams are caused when the heat inside your attic warms the underside of the roof and causes ice and snow to melt. Ice dams can cause serious damage to your roof and can leak into your attic. When we talk about ice dams, one of the most frequent questions we get asked is " how do I prevent or repair ice dams?".  Preventing ice dams is fairly simple with the use of proper insulation and air sealing. SilverGlo and Cellulose in Goshen, CT

This Goshen, CT homeowner was frustrated with uneven temperatures throughout his home. With the hot summer months looming, he knew that he would need to improve his insulation to keep his home comfortable and energy efficient. After doing some research online, the homeowner decided to call the experts at Dr. Energy Saver of CT for assistance.

On the day of the appointment, Sales Representative James Gonzales traveled to the home to assess the situation. Before long, James realized that the homeowner’s discomfort was being caused by inadequate insulation in the attic. In warmer months, the hot sun will heat up the roof and attic of any home. Without proper insulation a hot attic will heat up the rooms below it, which makes for an uncomfortable and inefficient home. James explained his findings to the homeowner and proposed some potential solutions to the problem. He suggested that the attic needed to be re-insulated, since the existing fiberglass batts had deteriorated over time. After they discussed which insulation materials to use, James and the homeowner agreed to solve the issue with a combination of SilverGlo rigid foam insulation and TruSoft Cellulose insulation.

On the day of production, Foreman Dan Kiley led a crew into the attic to begin their work. One side of the attic was taking the brunt of the heat, so the crew installed SilverGlo rigid foam insulation on that side only. SilverGlo provides an R-value from R-9 to R-11 depending on conditions, plus its reflective surface acts as an effective radiant barrier. By reflecting up to 97% of the Sun’s heat away from the home, SilverGlo can help to reduce cooling costs by as much as 15%. The crew then installed blow-in Cellulose insulation to form a thermal barrier in the attic. Cellulose is more effective than traditional fiberglass because it offers a superior R-value and wont compress or be damaged by pests. Made primarily from recycled newspaper, Cellulose is also a non-toxic, eco-friendly insulation material, making it a great fit for most homes.

As the crew wrapped up production, the homeowner noticed a change in the comfort of his home almost immediately. He was thrilled the results and was happy to know that his home would be more comfortable and energy efficient all summer long.

Cellulose Insulation in Plymouth, CT

This Plymouth, CT homeowner was frustrated with uneven temperatures in his home. As summer temperatures began to rise the problem became more intense and the home became more uncomfortable. The homeowner knew that he needed to make his home more comfortable, so he called the experts at Dr. Energy Saver of CT for help.

On the day of the appointment, Sales Representative Ray Lecours traveled to the home to assess the problem. It was not long before Ray discovered that the attic was the source of the problem. The attic was not properly insulated, and when the hot summer sun heated the roof, the attic also became very hot. This was heating the rooms below and making them extremely uncomfortable. As Ray finished his assessment, he shared his findings with the homeowner. Together, they discussed insulation options and Ray proposed some products that would help to fix the problem. The homeowner agreed with Ray’s assessment and decided to move forward with the project.

On the day of production, Foreman Eric Ardito and his crew arrived at the home to begin their work. They started by removing the old fiberglass insulation from the attic. The fiberglass had deteriorated over time and was damaged by pests, affecting its insulation value. Once the old insulation was out, it was time to Air Seal the attic. It is crucial to air seal before insulating because it closes off problematic leaks that contribute to uncomfortable temperatures, and once insulation is installed, it is much more difficult to access these areas.

Finally, the crew began to install new insulation into the attic. The homeowner chose Blown Cellulose Insulation to correct his home’s uncomfortable temperatures. Cellulose is a great insulation solution for many reasons. Made primarily from recycled newspapers, it is a non-toxic and environmentally friendly option that offers a superior R-value compared to traditional fiberglass batts. Cellulose insulation is also mold and pest resistant, which helps it retain its insulating value over time.

As the crew finished up, the homeowner noticed and immediate improvement in the comfort of his home. He could not believe how much cooler the upper level of his house had become with the improved insulation, and was excited to enjoy a more comfortable and energy efficient home for the rest of the summer and for years to come.

Insulated Rim Joist in Terryville, CT

Clay L., a Terryville homeowner, was experiencing drafty rooms in the winter and noticed his air conditioning came on very often in the summertime. These are common first signs of an energy inefficiency problem. Clay was having trouble figuring out what the issue was but had doubts about his basement. One of our Home Energy Specialist and Production Manager, Paul Zambrano, visited the home and the culprit was easy to spot. To the average homeowner, an uninsulated rim joist is easily overlooked, but Paul has worked in home energy for years and could identify it was the main source for the homeowner’s ailments.

An uninsulated rim joist can allow unconditioned, moist air from your basement into your home, which pushes your heat in the winter up through the attic. Two of our expert foremen, Ken Hartsburg and Dan Kiley, who both have years of experience in spray foam insulation, insulated the rim joist in the home and air sealed both the window and door in the basement. Now this Terryville basement is both well insulated and completely airtight. Soon, this homeowner will notice more consistent temperatures in his living spaces and lower heating and cooling bills.

Cape Cod Style Home Insulated in Plymouth, CT

These Plymouth homeowners live in a cape cod style home, which are infamous for tricky insulation. They called Dr Energy Saver of Connecticut because they were experiencing very drafty winters and felt like their heating and cooling systems were barely working at all. Home Energy Specialist Paul Zambrano knew that cape cod style homes are difficult to insulate due to their low-lying elevation and second floor rooms pushed against the roof line. This typically means rooms have intricate knee walls and having an airtight roof becomes much more important.

This home specifically had dry wall up against the roof in the second-floor loft with almost no insulation between. Paul and the homeowners agreed it would be most beneficial for the team to take down the dry wall and insulate the roof. Foreman Ken Hartsburg came to the home with his crew and started at work. They tore down the existing dry wall, removed the old, failing fiberglass batts insulation, and used our Spray Foam insulation.

Our Spray Foam insulation is typically used to air seal an entire area that needs to be insulated. Now this home’s roof line is airtight, very well insulated, and the foam itself is fireproof and adds to the overall structural integrity of the construction. The homeowners have noticed their cooling systems are coming on a lot less and keep the home cooler for longer in these summer months!

Dense Pack Cellulose Insulation in Harwinton, CT Home

This home was built years ago with an insufficient amount of insulation. The homeowners contacted Dr. Energy Saver of Connecticut and noted their home was very drafty and the most uncomfortable areas to be were up against the exterior walls. The Home Energy Specialist identified the reasoning for this to be failing and compressed fiberglass batts insulation. The homeowner and him decided to install dense packed cellulose insulation into all the wall cavities. This was done by the crew by removing individual pieces of siding at the top and bottom of each wall and drilling holes into the plywood beneath. They pumped in the cellulose using a pressurized hose and filled the cavities until they were completely packed. None of the original insulation is removed before this process because it means less cellulose is required to completely insulate the wall. The crew reinstalled the rows of siding and now the home is newly insulated! The homeowners were ecstatic and excited to save money on their heating and cooling bills. We later got reports from them saying they had saved 30% on their heating bills compared to the previous year.

Insulated Knee Wall in a Falls Village, CT Cape Cod Style Home

These homeowners in Falls Village, CT called Dr. Energy Saver of Connecticut to add insulation to their Cape Cod Style home. The issue with Cape Cod style homes is that they have a lower roof line and often have cathedral ceilings in the second-floor rooms… which looks lovely but proves difficult to insulate. This home had under-insulated knee wall areas off the second-floor rooms which led to their heated air escaping through the walls. Our Home Energy Expert James recommended Spray Foam insulation and SilverGlo Rigid Foam insulation in order to properly insulate the knee walls. This was completely by Spray Foam foreman Ken Hartsburg. The crew then replaced three of the leaking windows in the basement with our more efficient EverLast Window inserts.

Now these homeowners have a much more energy efficient home and have already noticed a big difference in their comfort!

Crawl Space Renovations in Roxbury, CT

This homeowner in Roxbury, Connecticut had an uncomfortable home due to insufficient insulation and noticed a foul odor in his basement. He had a mouse infestation problem in his basement. Wanting to solve the insufficient insulation and mouse problem he wanted to improve his basement by removing all insulation from the entire basement ceiling and the rigid foam covering the stairs and doing whatever it takes to clean out the area. Dr. Energy Saver of Connecticut knew they would be able to fix this basement and crawl space.

Prior to our work, this space was a mess. There was a terrible mouse infestation along with insufficient insulation that needed to be fixed. Our crew was able to remove the old insulation from the crawl space and the basement ceiling. After cleaning that out, we installed closed cell spray foam insulation, spray foam in the rim joist, which reduces heat loss and infiltration of cold air, applied MoldX which treats an area with approximately 2 feet high around the perimeter. All these repairs were able to give this homeowner the improvements for a healthy area he desperately desired.

This customer was so pleased with the job done he wrote a personal letter to Larry Janesky stating, “I would like to bring to your attention the excellent job that your two employees, Johnny Lopez and Rafael Quechotl, did at our home”.
