Attic Insulation Case Studies: Insulated Attic in Fairfield, CT

Colleen K., a Fairfield, CT homeowner, was frustrated with how much it was costing her family to heat and cool their home. She felt like no matter how often the air conditioning kicked on during the summer, they were still uncomfortable. They were concerned with the energy efficiency of their home, so they called Dr. Energy Saver of Connecticut for a free at home estimate.

One of our top Home Energy Specialists Keith Saunders traveled to the home to see what the culprit of the homeowners’ concerns was. He went into the attic and realized right away that it had been insulated using fiberglass batts insulation which were now in rough shape. The attic was not originally air sealed properly, so air from the home was passing directly into the attic and being filtered by the fiberglass. There was proof of this wherever he happened to lift the fiberglass, which would reveal incredibly dusty and dirty fiberglass. It was also likely the home had a pest issue because mice love to burrow in the soft material. The air ducts in the space were also under insulated and leaking cool air into the attic. This was a big issue and was why the home was so difficult to keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter.


Now that we identified the issues in the home, Keith proposed a series of services we could offer the homeowners to solve them. They agreed to have us air seal and insulate their attic as well as add insulation in the crawl space. We sent out our expert foreman Clive Burrell and Production Specialist Jamie Rivas to get the job done and worked at the home four days in a row.

They first removed the failing, dirty fiberglass in the attic and cleaned up some debris. Next, they used an expanding foam sealant to air seal at all the top plates and any crevices around ducts, wires, etc. that could allow air from the house escape. They then installed TiteShell insulated caps over all the recessed can light fixtures and used the foam sealant around the edges to make sure the fixtures could not leak air. To finish up air sealing they finally used closed-cell two-part Spray Foam to encapsulate the air ducts. This makes sure they are completely airtight and adds a high level of insulation that helps retain the warm or cold temperatures within the ducts.

Next came building an insulated storage area with retention dams. They first laid down several sheets of SilverGlo rigid foam insulation then began to build the area with particle board. This area allows the homeowners to continue storing items in the attic without having to compromise the insulation value achieved. The dams along the sides of the storage area keep the blown cellulose from getting on the storage items.

Next came the TruSoft Cellulose which was blown into the attic around the storage area in order to achieve an R-value of R40.0. This product was installed using a pressurized hose and is pretreated with borate, a chemical compound that makes the material fireproof and pest resistant.

Finally, the crew used SilverGlo rigid foam insulation along the walls in the basement and installed Spray Foam at the rim joist. This replaced the original failing insulation in the crawl space that was simply absorbing moisture and causing mold.

The homeowners are so excited to finally have a well-insulated home! They are glad they did the work when they did and have already noticed a difference in how often their air conditioning kicks on.
